Brave passers-by came to the aid of a woman who was being attacked in what police are describing as a “targeted” incident.
The 28-year-old female was attacked at around midnight on Monday, July 10 at Farme Cross.
She was crossing the road when the man approached her from behind and carried out the attack.
Two cyclists and two men were walking in the area and came to the woman’s aid, causing the suspect to flee up Cambuslang Road.
The lady did not require to go to hospital but has been left badly shaken by the incident. She made her way home where she then contacted police.
Rutherglen Police have moved to reassure the public, saying they believe it was not a random attack and the victim had been targeted.
They are now hunting for the man responsible and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A number 18 bus travelling from Glasgow city centre towards East Kilbride was also in the area around the time of the incident.
Inspector Jim Gillespie of Rutherglen Police moved to reassure the public.
He said: “Police inquiries are continuing.
“We are following a positive line of inquiry and this does not appear to be a random attack. We believe it is a targeted attack.
“People should not be alarmed in relation to this incident.”
The suspect is described as white, aged between 20 and 30 with a slim build and dark short hair.
Detective Constable Blair Carson said: “A young woman has been left extremely upset by this incident and it’s imperative we trace the man responsible.
“I am appealing to anyone who was in that area of Rutherglen around the time of the incident to call us, in particular the people who came to the young woman’s aid.
“Any information could prove significant and lead us to locating the man responsible.”
Detectives continue to review CCTV footage for any additional information on the suspect and the incident.
