George leaves Lang

Coach left gutted by gaffer’s decision

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers have parted company with coach George Fotheringham following disagreements with members of the management staff, the Reformer understands.

Manager Paul McColl and his remaining two assistants Billy Campbell and Jim Kerr apparently made the decision to relieve their colleague of his duties before informing him last week.

Fotheringham, an ex-youth coach at Rutherglen Glencairn, spent last season at The Lang and in that time helped the club to promotion and a league title before departing Somervell on Tuesday, July 25.

The decision is believed to have upset several of The Lang players but the club say none have asked to leave. Players and former players are among the many in the footballing community to send their best wishes to Fotheringham.

Lang gaffer McColl insists the 36-yearold was not sacked – but Fotheringham (right) told the Reformer he did not want to leave the club.

He said: “I am gutted to be leaving. I thought I could help take this club forward but the decision has been taken out of my hands. I wish Cambuslang Rangers all the best going forward.

“I have a few things lined up but I am not making any decisions yet. I will be back.”

A meeting with the players was held by McColl ahead of their friendly with Dundonald Bluebell on Saturday to confirm the club’s parting with Fotheringham.

McColl insists he and Fotheringham, a former Stonelaw High School pupil, remain friends and was disappointed in the circumstances.

The gaffer however reckons the team need to look forward and focus on the games ahead. He said: “I’d like to say good luck to him. He’s moving on, he’s a good coach who has done really well for us.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well. I’m sure he will be back in football soon enough.

“We’re all disappointed with the situation but you have to move on, that’s football.”

Cambuslang Rangers chairman, Billy Miller added: “On behalf of Cambuslang Rangers we are really sad to see George go and we wish him all the best for the future.”
