Rutherglen Reformer

Vale of Clyde first up in League Cup

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers gaffer Paul McColl says his team won’t be taking tonight’s opposition lightly as they gear up for the first competitive game of the season.

The Lang host Vale of Clyde in the opening match of the Central Sectional League Cup (kick-off 6.45pm).

Ian Currie’s men are the lowest ranked team in the group which includes Rutherglen Glencairn, East Kilbride Thistle, Blantyre Victoria and Cambuslang.

And after three straight defeats in three pre-season encounters, McColl knows the Central District Second Division club will be hoping to take advantage of the hosts bad run of form.

The Somervell Park boss said:“On Wednesday we have Vale of Clyde. They have always been good and it’s always difficult against them.

“There is no point saying it is going to be easy just because they are a league or two below us. There are no easy games.

“The Glens and us are probably the favourites to win the group but the favourites are not always the ones who go on to win everything.

“East Kilbride had a good result against Arthurlie last week so they are looking a decent side, and I don’t know too much about Blantyre.

“We are still looking to give guys game time but we will still want to put out a strong team.”

The Lang are due to play East Kilbride Thistle on Saturday, 2pm, before short journeys away to Blantyre, August 12, and Glencairn on August 16.
