Best foot forward for St Oswald’s church

- Jonathan Geddes

A King’s Park church is taking steps to ensure that parishioners stay healthy.

St Oswald’s Church is teaming up with a local slimming group for an initiative which it says is all about fun, fitness and faith and forms part of the Walk All Over Cancer With Slimming World challenge.

The church has organised weeknight walks that will start at the church at 7.30pm and last for 45 minutes, with some healthy refreshments served up after returning to St Oswald’s. On Sundays walks will take place after the morning service concludes at noon.

Members of the church and the slimming group have also set their own step goals for the month of August.

The walks will be led by the church’s Reverend LesleyAnn Craddock and Christina Ellis from Slimming World.

The slimmers have each pledged a daily steps total and will be sponsored to hit their target by fellow members, friends and families.

Cancer Research UK has a special significance for those who attend St Oswald’s.

Lesley-Ann’s husband Ashley has just entered remission after a year of treatment for plasmablastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Lesley-Ann said: “The treatment was the first trial of its kind and was only made possible due to amazing research this charity carries out.

“Without the essential fundraising this would not have been possible. It helps to support Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all cancers.”

Christina added: “We encourage members to become more active on a regular basis with short bursts of activity during their regular routine.

“These small changes can boost weight loss but they also have many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, building stronger bones, muscles and joints, and reduced risk of some cancers.”
