Two men who were assaulted on Saturday were attacked for a second time, according to locals.

The pair, aged 50 and 43, were walking near to the shops on Braemar Road, in the Cathkin area of Rutherglen when they were approached and assaulted by two men and a woman.

The 50-year-old man, who had his wallet and medication stolen from him, was rushed to Hairmyres Hospital where he was treated for a head injury before being allowed home.

The 43-year-old man sustained facial injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

But this is not the first time the two men have been victims of violence.

A local shopkeeper told the Reformer the two men had been assaulted in a similar attack.

He said: “A few years ago it was the same boys who were attacked.

“It’s such a shame, these boys don’t do any harm to anyone.

“These are two innocent boys, they are never any bother. If they were bad you could maybe understand it. For them it was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The shopkeeper did not witness the attack which took place at 9.30am shortly after the two men had left the chemist.

He, together with local residents, was surprised to see police on the scene.

Another shop worker in the area said: “We were wondering if they were targeted, or if it was random, we just don’t know. “It’s terrible. “It was at 9.30am and we had been quiet all morning. With all the houses there, I don’t know if other people saw it happen.”

Police are hopeful that given the time of day and proximity to households that locals will be able to help them identify those responsible.

The male suspects are described as being white and aged between 20 and 25 years old. One was 5ft 10 with short fair hair and wearing a grey tracksuit. The second was 5ft 8, of slim build with short brown hair and wearing a black top.

The woman was white and wearing purple clothing.

Detective Sergeant Martin McKendrick at Cambuslang CID said: “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack on two men who have been left injured and extremely shaken by the incident.

“It is imperative that the people responsible are caught and brought to justice for this crime.

“Officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries and viewing CCTV in the local area and know that the shops on Braemar Road would have been fairly busy at this time of the day. Therefore I urge anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact CID at Cambuslang via 101 quoting incident number 1155 of 19 August.”
