Gatlin causes stir after winning 100m gold

Should we allow drugs in sport?

- Murray Spooner

The issue of doping in sport has been widely discussed but the debate was raised once again during the recent athletics World Championships.

Athlete Justin Gatlin caused quite a stir after he was subjected to boos and jeers from the crowd as he received his 100m gold medal.

The American, who has twice served a doping ban, pulled off a shock win to end Usain Bolt’s reign in the Jamaican’s final individual race.

And it’s fair to say many fans were not happy Gatlin was allowed to compete.

So with that in mind, the Reformer took to the streets of Rutherglen to get your thoughts on athletes who have taken drugs in sport.

Rutherglen man George Morrison said: “It may or may not give someone an advantage but the feeling I get is that it does. I know there was not a lot of approval when Justin Gatlin picked up his medal and he was caught twice.”

Gus MacDonald, who works in Burnside, agreed: “Using drugs is cheating and they shouldn’t be allowed across all sports.

“I’ve heard people argue that they should keep them in but that would turn it into a farce.

“You would need two separate competitions for people on drugs and those who are not.”

Isabelle Moffat said: “I think drugs should be completely banned. There should be no drugs in sport.”

Karen Brennan added: “These days it’s different but if you are good at sport I don’t think you need them.”
