Hundreds object to housing on farm land
Hundreds of letters opposing a plan that could see 1200 homes built on Cambuslang farm land have been submitted to South Lanarkshire Council.
The letters, gathered by Halfway Community Council, urge the local authority to throw out a developer’s proposal to designate a large site off Westburn Road as residential use.
The proposal for the 40-hectare site at New House Farm was included in the council’s updated Main Issues Report – a key document in the preparation of the 2019 local development plan.
It seeks to identify different ways in which land can be used in the future.
But the suggestion has angered many in the Cambuslang East community who feel public services are failing to cater to the needs of the people who already live in the area.
Campaigners from the community council went door to door recently when hundreds of residents signed letters of objection.
Those letters, together with objection letters to other plans in the Main Issues Report and the Blantyre incinerator, were submitted to South Lanarkshire Council on Friday.
In total 500 letters were handed in.
A spokeswoman for the community council said: “It’s clear that the vast majority of residents we spoke to don’t want more housing until the council address the needed infrastructure development our community so badly needs.”
