Chapman dismayed as Clyde throw it all away in Elgin

- Murray Spooner

Clyde manager Jim Chapman said his team “self-imploded” to throw away a 2-0 lead and hand Elgin their first league win since February.

And the Bully Wee boss pointed the finger at ref Graham Beaton for not sending off Elgin’s Brian Cameron – the scorer of their last minute penalty winner – for a lunge on Smart Osadolor.

“We were in total control of the game. It should have been finished after 30 minutes, if you are going in 5-0 at half-time you can’t complain, ”said Chapman.

“We self-imploded again. How to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, we are getting too good at it.

“The decision by the ref , why he did not send off Brian Cameron I’ll never know. You can do violent conduct and get a booking, then my goalkeeper just pushes somebody and he falls to the ground and it’s a red card for him. It’s shambolic.”

After David Goodwillie and Darren Ramsay missed early chances for Clyde, Goodwillie opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a near post finish from skipper Barry Cuddihy’s right wing cross.

Ten minutes later, Clyde full-back Jordan Stewart doubled his team’s lead with a brilliant 25-yard drive into the top right hand corner of the net.

Elgin finally came to life when they scored seven minutes before the break, Jamie Reid wriggling into space before firing home from 12 yards.

The home side kept probing in the second half and Thomas Reilly had a shot deflected past on the hour.

At the other end Goodwillie was denied by a superb point-blank Marc Waters save after Ramsay slotted him through on goal.

Elgin drew level on 67 minutes when 17-year-old debut boy Lewis Strapp, on loan from Morton, broke on the left and delivered a superb ball for Chris McLeish to score at the back post.

Brian Cameron was denied by a good Blair Currie save 10 minutes later while Elgin sub Ally Sutherland curled inches past from a McLeish feed.

City looked to have blown it when sub Jordan Allan missed a sitter with a wayward header four minutes from time. However, in the last minute Allan put Cameron through to round keeper Currie, who brought him down for a red card. And the Elgin man converted to seal the three points.
