Glens collapse to ‘Frew

- Murray Spooner

Rutherglen Glencairn deserved to lose on Saturday after a poor second half performance according to manager Willie Harvey.

The Glens started the game well and matched hosts Renfrew from the first whistle.

An early goal may have put Harvey’s men in the driving seat, however a defensive error from Craig McGregor let the New Western Park side back into the match before a second half collapse by the visitors.

Harvey said:“We started really well. We scored a cracking goal and could have been two or three up after that.

“But again, as usual, we shot ourselves in the foot with a stupid mistake.

“It was a long kick out by their keeper and all Craig had to do was head it forward but he’s tried to head it back to our goalie and the ball falls to the striker’s feet who then makes it 1-1.

“After that it was eachy peachy before half-time but in the second half we collapsed. We weren’t getting the ball down or making passes and giving Renfrew far too much room. And again it’s two goals we lost which could have been prevented. Two balls into the box and the striker gets a head on them.

“It didn’t help that Andy Neil pulled up in the warm up and we had to replace him with Tony Fraser which changed our shape a bit. But I am not making any excuses. There were no excuses for that, we deserved what we got in the second half.”

The Glens have won only one match from five so far this season but Harvey admits he has highlighted the areas needed for improvement ahead of this weekend’s visit of Darvell Juniors.

He said: “We know how to fix things so it’s not a case of wondering where we are going wrong.

“I don’t know too much about Darvell but they’ve came up and had a few good results.

“I expect a tough and physical game.”
