Fire fears after blaze engulfs eighth floor flat

- Edel Kenealy

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the Rutherglen Reformer.

Two frightening stories on our front page this week reflect on incidents which happened in Halfway and Cambuslang.

Standford Hall residents recall the moment a fire engulfed a flat on the eighth floor, leaving one man dead and his brother seriously injured.

We extend out deepest sympathies to the family of John and William McKechnie and their friends.

Our thoughts also go out to the 34-year-old man attacked by a gang on Hamilton Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is the second violent incident to take place in the Halfway area this month, with a man also assaulted within Spices takeaway on August 6.

People with information regarding both senseless incidents should contact police on 101.

The mother of a girl who was knocked down last week has also spoken to the Reformer.

Amy Morrison sustained serious head injuries when she was struck by a car on Rodger Drive last Tuesday. Read her story on page 7. In happier news, the minister for King’s Park Parish Church has spoken about her husband’s miracle recovery from cancer.

Lesley-Ann Craddock’s husband, Ashley, was diagnosed with plasmablastic lymphoma last August.

But an experimental dose of intense chemotherapy has eliminated Ashley’s tumour, surprising even his doctors. Read his inspirational story on pages 4 and 5.

Also this week we continue our ‘First Day At School’ pictures. Thanks to everyone who submitted images.
