G.E.R.Sisadivisiveissue
You have kindly published letters of mine before on the G.E.R.S figures (Government Expenditure and Revenue Statistics). With this year’s having been released, this is my final comment on them.
G.E.R.S is a divisive issue in Scotland. Opposition parties and die hard unionists use them as confirmation that if Scotland were independent it would be too poor with massive debt that would result in austerity cuts.
On the other hand supporters of independence argue that G.E.R.S are fiscal estimates within a UK conflation which tells us very little, if anything, as to what the financial condition would be in an independent Scotland were it to move total control of income and expenditure. And in which decides its fiscal policies and priorities, regardless of whichever party is in power at Holyrood.
It is a constant polarised argument and no middle road of compromise can exist between either side.
What will change the above scenario is the consequences of Brexit when its effects come into being.
The mirage of a unity of four nations has disintegrated caused by two major events which are the Scottish and EU referendums.
Any politician who claims that they will “save the union” are deluding themselves and the people because political reality is unfolding.
