Volunteers can be a class act for Malawi

Help for African kids

- Jonathan Geddes

A Rutherglen charity ishoping locals will take up the chance to have the trip of a lifetime - and help an impoverished country in the process.

Classrooms For Malawi, based on Kirkwood Street, aim to help future generations in the African nation by building them schools and classrooms.

The hope is that by providing a good education more youngsters in the country will be able to escape poverty in the future.

Now they are looking for volunteers to travel to the country in the summer of 2018 and help with the building process.

Gemma Love, a support officer at the charity, said: “Volunteers will be carrying out building or regeneration work. This means they may be building a classroom block from scratch or working at a pre-existing school that needs improvement.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn to work as part of a team because they get to see first hand the hugely positive impact their work has on the whole community and it is inevitable that great friendships form as a result.”

Volunteers would spend two weeks in Malawi.

The importance of the work being done in Malawi cannot be overstated.

Gemma added: “There is a massive deficit of classrooms in Malawi with so many children learning in unsafe buildings or outdoors under trees.

“We believe that education is the most sustainable route out of poverty for Malawians and that is why our classrooms are so important.”

Malawi is one of the 10 poorest countries in the world, and over 55 per cent of the population live below the poverty line.
