Curtain set to rise on good old whodunnit

Countdown to Rutherglen Rep’s latest show

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen Rep members were getting into character last week as their new show draws near.

The am dram group will be at the town hall this Friday and Saturday, September 8 and 9, to perform Invite To A Murder.

The plot focuses on Joyce Harbinger, a woman who is less than pleased when her husband Leonard insists on arranging a party to celebrate her birthday.

As the guests arrive and the evening progresses it becomes apparent her husband does not top anyone’s popularity list, but does anyone dislike him enough to contemplate murder?

The Rep’s Andrew Cleary says the show is a good, old fashioned whodunnit, written by Gerry McCartan.

Andrew said: “It’s a murder mystery that plays between two sets, one in a courtroom with the Queen’s counsel putting forth an argument about the murder, and then it cuts to the party scene, with the woman, her husband and everyone at her birthday party.

“Tensions run high there and it chops between the two sets as we go along.

“There are quite a few twists as it goes along.”

After the weekend’s shows the Rep will be looking toward to their Christmas panto, which this year is Mother Goose.

And the Rep are always keen to get volunteers along to take part. Andrew added: “The actual shows are great but the rehearsals are good fun too, because there’s a social side to the rep and you end up chatting to people, catching up and making friends.

“The panto is always great fun, and we’re looking for people to help with every role, from acting to production to helping with the set.”

The cast for Invite To A Murder is Andrew Cleary as Alex Dill QC , Claire Troup as Joyce Harbinger, Iain Morrison as Leonard Harbinger, Gerry McCartan as Harry Benson, Julia Girdwood as Miriam Benson, Norman Rae as Gilbert Hudson and Jane Blackwood as Beatrice Hudson, with David Chapman directing and Isabella Rae as the production assistant.

Tickets are now on sale for the show, priced at £7/£6, with the performance starting at 7.30pm on each night.

Tickets can be booked from the venue in person, by visiting www.sllcboxoffice. co.uk or by calling 0141 613 5700.
