Defeat in league opener

-

Cambuslang Rugby Club made a disappointing return to BT West League Division 1.

The Coats Park side fell to a 29-17 loss against Greenock Wanderers on the opening day of the new league season.

Despite taking the lead twice through tries from full-back Louis Senter, Cambus headed back to the changing rooms behind at half-time.

Greenock added to the scoreline in the second half but a try in the final 10 minutes from Senter set up a nervy finish as Cambuslang pushed for another but just fell short.

Commenting on the match, head coach Jamie Seery said: “Obviously I was disappointed that we lost.

“I felt, and the players felt ,that this was a game we could go out and win and I still feel we should have won it.

“We scored first and then they got a try which should not have stood. One of their players had clearly knocked the ball on and the referee failed to see it so it stood.

“It put us on the back foot a little bit even through we got another try later in the half.

“A couple of decisions went against us and the guys didn’t react, they were focussing more on the referee rather than what we should be doing.

“We got a try in the last 10 minutes which meant the guys were pushing for another but it never came.

“I was pleased with the performance but not overall, the players know what was not good enough.

“We need to get to back to how we were playing last season.”

He added:“It’s not the start we wanted however, it was always going to be tough in the first game with new combinations.

“We attacked well in parts but didn’t really show what we can do and the threat we will be in the weeks to come.”

Seery is now looking for his players to react in the right manner in their first home game of the campaign against Irvine RFC this weekend.

The Ayrshire side were hammered 79-11 by Allan Glen’s on Saturday but the Cambus coach insists the opposition will be hurting and will also be looking to bounce back.

Serry said:“As I have said before, we are aiming to win all our home games so I believe this is a game we should win.

“Although, they [Irvine] lost badly to Allan Glen’s on Saturday so they’ll also be looking to get some points on the board the same as us.” Results: Stewartry16 - 45 Carrick, East Kilbride 36 - 8 Helensburgh, Oban Lorne 19 - 25 Garnock, Annan 25 - 31 Kilmarnock, Allan Glen’s 79 - 11 Irvine RFC. Fixtures: Sept 9 — Carrick v Greenock Wanderers, Allan Glen’s v Annan, Kilmarnock v Oban Lorne, Garnock v East Kilbride, Helensburgh v Stewartry, CAMBUSLANG v Irvine. All 3pm kick off.
