Lang dumped out cup

-

Cambuslang Rangers missed out on their first cup final in 17 years as Clydebank cruised to victory at the last four stage of the Sectional League Cup.

Paul McColl’s side’s first defeat of the season came on Wednesday evening as The Bankies, a Super Premier outfit, arrived at Somervell firing on all cylinders.

For a team that had won all six of their opening matches for the season, The Lang were desperately disappointing and it could have been much worse for them.

The hosts started brightly enough though and a couple of dangerous moments gave the Bankies’defence something to think about. Hal Bohme’s powerful drive from range went just past the post and John Gemmell fired high over the bar from outside the box.

Bohme then saw his low cross pushed away by the keeper into the path of John Henderson who blasted far and wide of the mark.

But by the time Phil Johnston scored the opening goal after 41 minutes Clydebank’s domination was almost total. Johnston had a stroke of luck when Jordan Shelvey forced Iain Stewart into a save that fell nicely for him to score.

However, the teams went into the break level when a defensive lapse allowed Dale Simeon to run in on Morrison and finish expertly.

The Bankies quickly retook the lead at the start of the second half when Johnston was floored for a penalty. Shelvey saw his kick saved but managed to slide the rebound in.

The third goal was a defensive disaster. Johnston hit the ball too far in front of himself at the halfway line but incredibly the home defence parted like the Red Sea and he was allowed to continue unchallenged to the goal to slot home.

Ciaran Lafferty was completely unmarked as he scored the fourth with a neat header, and Scott Miller, finished off the scoring with a smart shot.
