Jeremy Corbyn’s visit to Cambuslang prompted a debate on Facebook among our readers.

Here is what you had to say: “Well done to the Scottish SNP government for getting this plant open again.” Natalie Sutherland

“Maybe they could have given the contract for the new, superb bridge [to Clydebridge] instead of getting the steel from China. Well done SNP, you could have kept many people in a job but no let’s give our contract to overseas companies.”-William Alexander

“None of the steel industry left in Scotland was physically able to produce the type of finished rolled steel required for the bridge. Only Ravenscraig could have. Sadly, the SNP does not have a time machine to go back and change this.”- Natalie Sutherland

“Natalie Sutherland, you are totally wrong. Ravenscraig steel was not plate steel but coil steel used for cars and white goods only. Dalziel, Clydebridge and Scunthorpe/Teesside steel used in bridge engineering and shipbuilding and also the wire rope used in the new bridge used to be made in Warrington and East Yorkshire. I say this as an ex-steelworker and an ex-steelworkers trade union full-time official.”- Wills Paterson

“If it hadn’t been for the SNP intervening, both places would now be closed altogether. As such they did keep people in jobs and avoided the plants being closed completely. Always with the SNP bad rubbish. The bridge itself created employment and they fought and succeeded in ensuring the steel works stayed open despite zero interest from Westminster in doing so.”- Tom MacArthur
