Clare praises action on nuisance calls

-

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has welcomed moves to tackle nuisance calling in Scotland.

The Scottish Government released its £50,000 Nuisance Call Action Plan earlier this week to raise awareness of the issue of scam and nuisance calls.

It comes as new statistics reveal over half of calls made to Glasgow telephone numbers over a three-year period, including Rutherglen and Cambuslang, were nuisance calls.

Ms Haughey said:“Nuisance calls are irritating for many people – and we need to be vigilant as they can be scams and leave people out of pocket, particularly where they target the elderly and vulnerable.

“This fund will ensure those most at risk from these calls can get the protection they need and call-blocking technology can be installed.

“This is part of our wider strategy to support people who might be affected by these calls. The Scottish Government’s nuisance calls action plan will raise awareness and empower people to protect themselves.

“It is positive to see the Scottish Government taking action where it can, and we’ll continue to press the UK Government to take greater action to reduce nuisance calls.”

“I would also encourage people who are concerned or affected by nuisance calls to support the Which Nuisance Calls Campaign. You can register your interest at https://campaigns.which.co.uk/ nuisance-calls-scotland/.”
