Student Josh in with the bricks

Lego models of his favourite pub

- Murray Spooner

A Cambuslang student is piecing together his university degree, literally, by building his favourite pub out of Lego.

Josh Burnett, 20, was tasked with making a representation of a Scottish building in a unique way and spent three months recreating to scale the outside and inside of The John Fairweather boozer on Main Street.

The Whitlawburn resident, who is studying at Strathclyde University, has had a huge passion for Lego from a young age and used more than 14,000 of his pieces for the project.

Josh, a former West Coats Primary and Cathkin High School pupil, even included some of his own film-themed Lego men and women inside his model of the pub which sits on the site of a former Savoy cinema.

He said: “It was part of my project for my first year as an architecture student and we were asked to build what we thought were the best buildings in Scotland.

“I’ve been a big fan and have used Lego since I was a kid, that’s how I got into architecture.

“So I decided to go for the Wetherspoons in Cambuslang. It’s such a cool design with its old cinema style.

“I have to say thanks to the manager Rob Hughes and the guys at the pub for their help. They took me round on a tour as part of my research and showed me upstairs to have a look about.

“When I showed both models to the pub, the staff said they were amazing. I’m so happy with it.”

John Fairweather was the premiere cinema designer in Europe throughout the 1920s and was responsible for iconic picture houses all over Scotland.

As well as the Cambuslang Savoy, Fairweather designed for Green’s and the Rio in Rutherglen and Gateside School in Cambuslang.

The Main Street pub – named in honour of the Glasgow-born architect – opened two years ago and is now run by manager Rob Hughes.

Rob said: “It’s the most impressive piece of Lego building we have ever seen.

“Josh has replicated the pub to exactly how it looks right now and the architecture is phenomenal.

“He’s got everything in there in exactly the right place, from the bar to the fireplace – and even the toilets.”
