Work of CAB draws praise

-

The work of the Rutherglen and Cambuslang branch of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau has been praised at the Scottish Parliament.

During a speech on nuisance calls, Glasgow MSP James Kelly credited the work of manager Sharon Hampson and her team who have been working with consumer group Which? in promoting ways for consumers to optout of and also report cold calls.

The debate followed a meeting between Mr Kelly and Ms Hampson who discussed on-going issues affecting local residents, including concerns regarding the roll-out of Universal Credit.

Mr Kelly said that while the Scottish Government’s funding to help tackle nuisance calls was welcomed, there was much more to do to stamp out a daily frustration for thousands of local residents.

He said: “Nuisance calls are a daily frustration for so many local people.

“Many don’t know where to turn and I am regularly contacted by people from Rutherglen and Cambuslang who want advice.

“Sharon Hampson and her team in the CAB do great work in stamping out nuisance calls and providing guidance for concerned residents.”

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has previously spoken of her desire to combat nuisance calls.

The Scottish Government released its £50,000 Nuisance Call Action Plan earlier this month to raise awareness of the issue of scam and nuisance calls.

It came as new statistics revealed over half of calls made to Glasgow telephone numbers over a three-year period, including Rutherglen and Cambuslang, were nuisance calls.
