Put life back in

‘Cambuslang is a town

- Edel Kenealy

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the leader of South Lanarkshire Council to tackle the continued decline of Cambuslang Main Street.

Launched by local woman Clare Williamson, the petition demands Councillor John Ross “sits up and listens” to residents concerned about a lack of social and commercial facilities.

To date it has been signed by nearly 3,600 people.

The petition on change.org states: “The council continue to build more houses in Cambuslang, attracting young families to the area with absolutely no facilities to encourage them to become part of our community.

“Cambuslang is a town with no beating heart.

“This vicious circle of decline must stop. If we are to save our town then the community must force South Lanarkshire Council to invest in Cambuslang. So far the council has ignored requests and complaints from the very residents it is accountable to.”

Speaking to the Reformer this week, Clare said there were two fundamental problems in Cambuslang - a poor variety of shops and a lack of essential services including social outlets.

She said problems with parking were leading to reduced footfall, which leads to businesses closing and the town looking less attractive to potential
