‘Ryder Cup’ event is a success

- Murray Spooner

As we move into the autumn and the temperature lowers, the number of games on the greens has decreased significantly.

However, one game which went ahead was the twice yearly match between Burnside and Rutherglen for the Ryder Cup.

Following the principles of the golf game, a team of 12 for each club got four games each, a single tie, a pairs, a triple and a fours game. Two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw in each game.

The Burnside team roared into the lead when they won five of the first six singles games and then followed this by winning five of the six pairs games.

Rutherglen captain James Douglas had strong words of encouragement for his team and a slight rally followed but the damage had already been done and Burnside ran out worthy winners.

Meanwhile at Cambuslang Bowling Club, Craig Jamieson, a four times club champion, defeated Richie McInall Jnr in the championship decider to take his fifth title.

At Halfway and District, John Sheppard overcame a tricky tie with David Armstrong to claim a clean sweep of the gents singles competitions and won the Vice President’s Cup.

In the Mixed Rinks competition, 18 teams took part and the eventual winners were Shanice Goodwin, Mark McCulley, Eddie Mellon and Robert Pye.

They defeated Laura and Bernadette Sheppard and Richie and Stewart Conway in the final.

The Dalton Triples, sponsored by the Fergus family, was won by Dougie McKechnie, Bryan McAllister and Jacky Fergus. They defeated Taylor Gray, Brian McLeod and Stephen Mcintyre in a close final that went right down to the last bowl.

And finally, Kirkhill Bowling Club hosted an Invitation Mixed Triples tournament, sponsored by Ronnie and Maureen Lewis.

Whitefield’s Heather Blair, Sheila Gallagher and Anne Grant triumphed over St Leonards Bowling Club, East Kilbride, bowlers Paul Lambert, Frank Lynch and Moira Lynch.

The losing semi-finalists from Kirkhill were Kenny Harkin, Joseph Wilson and Kris Wilson and Penicuik’s Dorothy Lavin, Lawrence Lavin and Andrew Lowrie.
