Cambus suffer biggest loss in years

-

Kilmarnock ............ 59 Cambuslang .......... 21 A tiresome second half was Cambuslang Rugby Club’s downfall as they fell to a 5921 defeat to league leaders Kilmarnock.

Jamie Seery’s men started the match brightly and opened the scoring with a well worked try from Stuart Newall down the right hand side of the pitch.

Indio Harland kicked the conversion from under the posts and the Cambus ran into a seven point lead with only three minutes on the clock.

Kilmarnock responded by taking the play deep down into the Cambuslang 22 and a good break by Ian Speirs resulted in a good home try.

Scott Brown converted and the scores were level after 10 minutes. From the restart Kilmarnock again moved up the field and some good handling between both backs and forwards resulted in a try for Ross Murray but the conversion was missed.

Cambuslang were not going to lie down however, and produced some fine play resulting in a well worked score from Derek McNeil which was converted to put Cambus back into the lead 14 –12 with 10 minutes of the half still to play.

From the kick off Kilmarnock retained possession and again some fine handling produced another try, Gary Thornton touching down and Brown adding the extras.

On the stroke of half-time a break away from Alan Speirs produced another try, again converted by Brown extended Killie’s lead to 26-14 at half time.

After the restart Kilmarnock were applying all the pressure and it was no surprise when Alan Speirs waltzed over to score his second try two minutes after the break.

It was all Kilmarnock now with Cambuslang having the odd attack but it was another try from Murray which gave Killie a healthy 40 point to 14 lead.

Cambuslang were still trying to play rugby and one of their few visits into Kilmarnock territory produced a try from Chris Bolton and touch line conversion from Harland.

Despite the set-back Killie responded immediately with three more tries, leaving Cambus disappointed they could not pick up a bonus point in Seery’s worst defeat since taking charge.
