SEERY HURT BY HEAVY DEFEAT

Cambus crumble under Kilmarnock onslaught

- Murray Spooner

Head coach Jamie Seery could not hide his disappointment after Cambuslang Rugby Club recorded their heaviest defeat in his time in charge.

The Coats Park side had enjoyed a first season of success under Seery last year when he guided them to second spot, securing promotion in the process.

But a 59-21 loss away to Kilmarnock on Saturday turned out to be the highest number of points they had conceded while the 26-year-old has been at the helm in the past two years.

Seery admitted he was gutted to lose his fourth match in five with a depleted squad but could take positives from their league position of eighth.

He said: “That is the highest amount of points we have lost since I’ve been in charge.

“It’s obviously really disappointing but I felt we were holding them in the first half. Then after half- time we started to fall away and they just ran away with it in the end. “We had a few guys unavailable who have experience of playing at this level and if we had them in the squad I’m sure it would have been closer match. “Kilmarnock went top of the league with that win and if you look at their results in the past few games they deserve to be there. “They deserved to win on Saturday but we had guys in who would have normally been playing in the second team and some who had not had very much game time.”

The Cambus knew they were up against it even before a ball was kicked without the injured Gregor Jones, Louis Senter, Greg Morrison and Ross Hynde for the trip to Bellsland.

But a bright start saw the visitors take a seven point lead after only three minutes.

Killie responded well and went in at half-time 26-14 up before storming the second half and eventually securing a comfortable victory.

But despite the heavy loss, Seery insisted his side must not be too disheartened and focus on the next game against another of the division’s big hitters.

“We have Allan Glen’s next Saturday, that will be another tough game,” he said.

“I think it will be a real physical match. You would expect them to be there or there abouts [at the top of the league] by the end of the season with the players they have.

“But we will look to compete and because it’s at home, I’ve always said we need to try and win our home games to give us a chance in this division.

“We’ll hope to have some of the injured guys back by then.”
