More patrols to tackle disruption

- Jonathan Geddes

Cops are to increase patrols in Burnhill in a bid to crack down on drunken youths who are causing disruption in the area.

However, the recent fun fair in the scheme was praised – despite a member of staff there saying the area was up there with the wildest he had seen.

However, the recent fun fair in the area was praised - despite a member of staff there saying the area was up there with the wildest he had seen.

The news came at a Rutherglen Community Council meeting last week.

Community cop PC John Drummond told the meeting: “We are still having problems at the White flats in Burnhill, particularly with drunken behaviour.

“A lot of those causing the problems are under 16.

“We are looking at ASBOs for certain individuals if this continues, and there have been cases where we have taken them to the police station to show that we are not going to tolerate this.

“We do know what is happening there and we are increasing the amount of patrols there, so there will be a more visible presence.”

Another issue is the ongoing refurbishment of the flats.

PC Drummond added: “We are in constant contact with the site managers to make sure there is not trouble there.

“The downside with scaffolding is that anywhere it goes up, kids will climb it.

“We do get calls about it, and it is an ongoing issue.

“They are hoping to have phase one completed by the end of the year.”

A brighter piece of news was that the recent funfair passed without any major incidents, despite locals fearing the worst. “The security from the organisers there was pretty tight, said PC Drummond.

“We did speak to one of them and he said he’d worked in some pretty wild areas, and that Burnhill was up there with them, but that there was not a major incident.

“We worked with Cathcart police office to make sure there was not any gangs of youths coming down from there (to cause trouble).”
