Mum humbled by kindness

- Edel Kenealy

A Cambuslang mother says she is overwhelmed by the kindness of locals who offered to replace the hundreds of pounds stolen from her when she was distracted at an ATM.

Lynne Barnett was using the cash machine at Morrison’s supermarket in Cambuslang when she became distracted and forgot to take the requested £250 from the dispenser.

The money - withdrawn for a weekend away with her son - was not swallowed up by the machine and appears to have been taken by an opportunistic thief.

But staff at Morrison’s who saw how upset Lynne was rallied and offered to try and collect the missing cash.

The appeal posted online saw dozens of people offer to contribute to the fund.

Robert Wilson, who owns Robert Wilson Executive Travel - a luxury transport and travel company offering private airport transfers and UK-wide travel - offered its services free of charge.

Homeshield Scotland in Cambuslang also offered to contribute to the cost of the holiday, as did many members of the All About Cambuslang Facebook page.

Lynne said the fund was not necessary, but said she was “truly humbled” by the people of Cambuslang.

“Honestly just the response from the amazing people in Cambuslang has been enough,” she said. “There are definitely more kind people than bad in the world.

“The two men who offered help directly, that was a truly lovely offer.

“My brilliant family saw to it that we got away this weekend but thank you to everyone. I’m overwhelmed by everyone’s kindness.”

People became aware of Lynne’s situation when she detailed what had happened at the ATM on the All About Cambuslang Facebook page.

Upset and angry, the nurse said the person had stolen from a hard-working single mum.

She said: “I was so upset when it happened and I wrote the post on Facebook in the hope it would reach the person who took the money. I didn’t expect this response.

“I wanted that person to know that I saved that to go on holiday.”

Lynne and her 13-year-old son Alex finally travelled to Centre Parks at the weekend with her brother, sister in law and their children where she tried to put the ordeal behind her.

She is currently liaising with her bank about the possibility of getting the money back via an ATM claim procedure and the police are investigating the theft.
