Happy couple celebrate
Anne and Bob mark their diamond anniversary
A Rutherglen woman and her husband celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this month surrounded by family and friends.
Anne and Robert McNellan tied the knot at Burnside Blairbeth Parish Church on October 5, 1957. The happy couple, who have both celebrated their 80th birthdays in the past eight months, met on the Isle of Man in July the previous year while on holiday.
And they celebrated 60 years of married life with an afternoon lunch at the Lynnhurst Hotel in Johnstone on October 7.
Anne, who grew up on the old Harriet Street in Rutherglen, but who now lives in Paisley, was a GPO telephonist before working as a receptionist for legal firm McNair, Clyde and Ralston,
The couple, who are parents to two daughters, Karen and Julie, grandparents to Laura and Kirsty, and great-grandparents to Cole, were joined by 50 guests to congratulate them on the milestone.
Brigadier Alastair Macmillan, the deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, also handed over a telegram on behalf of the Queen on the day. Anne, a former St Columbkille’s Primary pupil, told the Reformer: “It was an absolutely wonderful day. What the girls put on for us was fantastic. Myself and Bob got up to do a speech and we spoke about our memories and how we’d met.
“Mr MacMillan was there to present us with the telegram which added to a fabulous day. I’d like to thank everyone who came.”
