Rutherglen Reformer

Chance to take a walk down memory lane

- Douglas Dickie

School days - the best days of your life.

At least, that is what we have been led to believe.

I think it would be fair to say that most of us carry fond memories of our time at school. The pride at your first day in primary was matched only by the joy of making new friends.

Of course, the step up to ‘big school’ could be daunting, but the new teachers and subjects, as well as a whole host of potential mates, made it as exciting as it was scary.

It is with this in mind that one man hopes to bring together his generation of school colleagues for a nostalgic reunion.

David Lang attended Rutherglen Academy in the late 1960s. At the turn of the century, he actually bought the old building to convert it into flats. He even took the old gym hall floor home after demolition of the science block.

Now, nearly two decades later, he will host the reunion he always wanted to in Rutherglen Town Hall next year.

David is calling on those who attended the old Rutherglen Academy between 1965 and 1970 to get in touch. You can read more about his plans on pages four and five.

Elsewhere this week, it is always nice to see a local organisation recognised and that was the case for Rutherglen and Cambuslang Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) last week.

The group marked their 50th anniversary with a visit from Princess Anne, and you can see our pictures on pages 38 and 39.

But despite the presence of royalty, I’m sure even the princess herself would agree that the real stars are the staff and volunteers who work so hard at the CAB on a daily basis.

Well done to all involved.
