Welcome return of bobbies on the beat

Increase in police presence and patrols is good news

- Edel Kenealy

News that community cops were ‘back on the beat’ in Rutherglen and Cambuslang was welcomed by locals in Rutherglen this week.

The Reformer reported recently that new problem solving teams in the two towns would see the same cops man the area and build relationships within the community.

Officers will be visiting schools and community organisations to get to know locals and the issues that concern them.

The traditional ‘bobbies on the beat’ model and a more visible police presence was good news for the vast majority of people who spoke to the Reformer on Thursday.

Kaye Payne said she would like to see officers walk the streets as they used to in previous years.

“I see plenty of police cars but they would be better on the beat,” she said

“The new model sounds good. That’s the way it was when I was growing up.”

Elspeth Baird agreed, adding: “I don’t see that many police at the minute. It would be good to see them on foot as opposed to in their cars.”

Danny Smith from Rutherglen said he felt there should be more officers employed across the area.

He said: “There are not enough. In my day it was different, you never had all this crime. That was in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

“You never had people hitting the police then. They get away with so much now.

“I would like to see them on foot, but a lot of people aren’t joining up any more.”
