Golden moment for Toryglen primary

Top award for school

- Douglas Dickie

A Toryglen school has been recognised for its commitment to physical education and extracurricular sport.

Staff and pupils at St Brigid’s Primary were presented with the sportscotland gold school award earlier this month.

In doing so they became just the second primary school in the whole of Glasgow to be recognised in this way.

The award is designed to encourage schools to continuously improve physical education and sport, as well as to create sporting links with other schools and the communities around them.

To gain the gold standard, St Brigid’s had to fulfil a number of criteria.

These included giving pupils access to at least two hours of quality physical education a week, giving them the opportunity to compete and recognising their achievements.

Carol Scott, head teacher of St Brigid’s Primary, said: “It’s an honour to be awarded the sportscotland Gold School Sport Award.

“Our staff work incredibly hard to deliver many sporting opportunities for pupils in our school.”

Stewart Harris, chief executive of sportscotland, said St Brigid’s pupils and staff should be “very proud of this achievement”.

He added: “Not only have they put physical education and sport at the heart of their school and local community, but they have managed to do so in a way that encourages all pupils to engage in physical activity whilst having fun at the same time.”

Over 200 schools across Scotland have received gold awards.

St Mark’s Primary is the only school in Rutherglen or Cambuslang to have been awarded the standard.
