Cops continue to probe incident

-

A man who was hit by a van on a busy Cambuslang road is winning his fight for life.

Steven Donaghy was on a traffic island on East Kilbride Road just north of the Cathkin roundabout when he was hit.

The 22-year-old was rushed to Hairmyres Hospital before being transferred to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

Police are continuing to probe the incident.

Steven’s girlfriend Danielle McCusker, 26, who lives with Steven at their home in

Rutherglen, told the Reformer he was no longer in a critical condition.

She said: “He’s stable at the moment, that’s all I would really like to comment right now as we are all finding it hard to process what’s happened.”

A woman, 22, who was driving the van was left badly shaken but uninjured during the horror incident.

Police closed the road for several hours after the accident around 7.45am on Wednesday, October 25 while ambulance crew members treated the individuals involved.

Crash scene investigators combed the site for clues and are scouring CCTV to establish the cause of the smash.

Danielle’s mum Jacqueline McCusker, 54, hailed the doctors and nurses for fighting to save Steven, who is originally from Paisley.

She said: “Steven has had surgery for swelling and a bleed on the brain.

“Everybody at the hospital have helped us so much and we can’t thank them enough for all they do.

“They truly are heroes and deserve all the praise in the world.

“Steven is an avid St Mirren fan and just a lovely young man.

“He is fit and healthy, so we are praying all will be good.”

Police Scotland confirmed Steven was still in hospital in a ‘serious’ condition yesterday, Tuesday, and are continuing their enquiries.

Sergeant Alasdair Marshall said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the A749, in particular motorists, bus drivers and taxi drivers who were on the opposite carriageway.

“If you have any information or any dash-cam footage, please do contact us.

“Your information could assist in the ongoing investigation into establishing the circumstances of this incident.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Motherwell Road Policing via 101, quoting incident number 0538.
