New homes being Hoovered up quickly

- Edel Kenealy

Only four houses are still available for sale in the first phase of homes to be built at the old Hoover factory site.

Nineteen homes in the Camas Walk development were launched for sale last month, with a mix of two and three-bed homes priced from £139,995.

To date eight properties - a mix of two-bed terraces and three-bed semi detached houses - have been reserved and seven sold.

The remaining 79 homes of the 91-house development by Dawn Homes will be released for sale at a later date.

The sales follow initial reports from Dawn Homes that there had been significant interest in the Somervell Street site.

The company states: “Our development is an ideal location for a modern residential development as all the transport connections are already there as are all the amenities.

“Camas Walk will enhance this already popular town and the combination of starter homes and larger detached properties will appeal to many new home buyers.” Construction on the first homes is imminent, with the show home opening on September 30.

It follows several months of land works and decontamination after heavy metals and hydrocarbon were found on site.

The uneven nature of the land also meant tonnes of earth needed to be moved and flat areas created to allow construction to proceed, whilst a spinal road through the middle of the site has also been completed.

The spinal road divides the site into two parcels of land.

Dawn Homes is taking responsibility for the land closest to the River Clyde, where a range of two, three and fourbedroom homes will be built.

A second parcel of land, on the south west of the Hoover site, will be developed by Keepmoat Properties Ltd and contain 104 terraced and semidetached homes with two and three bedrooms.

Plans have been scaled back from an original proposal to build 300 homes on the site. A large area is being used to store and move mounds of earth, needed to even out the land for construction.

However, it is anticipated this land will be developed at a later date.
