Cake for Christian Aid
Kind-hearted parishioners were having a cuppa for a good cause recently.
A coffee morning was being held in Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church Hall, with all the money raised going towards Christian Aid.
And the morning was a big hit, pulling in a record amount of cash for the charity.
Marjory Grieg, who helped to organise the event, believes it showed how churches throughout Rutherglen will work hard together to help out a cause.
She said: “We had a very successful coffee fayre, raising £688 for the work of the charity.
“It is the most we have raised at coffee fayre, perhaps everyone’s generosity was increased because of world events and crisis in so many countries.
“The churches in Rutherglen all work very well together, particularly when a need arises.”
The morning featured tea and coffee, as well as home baking, cakes and plenty of chat between friends.
Earlier this year the Reformer told how the churches in Rutherglen had raised a whopping £7,940.66 for Christian Aid over a period of several months.
The money raised there was going towards 100 energy-saving stoves in Bangladesh.
Christian Aid aims to bring an end to poverty around the world by tackling its root causes as well as its effects.
That means they are fundraising in over 60 countries, helping deal with emergencies such as the recent flooding in South East Asia and the mudslides in Sierra Leone as well as ongoing problems like HIV and malaria.
Their current campaigns involve trying to combat the causes of climate change and moving away from fossil fuels, as well as trying to battle tax dodging that is taking place in some of the world’s poorest communities.
The charity is also seeking to stop gender inequality, which is a particular problem in some of the world’s poorest countries. For example they are challenging caste and gender-based discrimination in South Asia, and defending the rights of transgender human rights activists in Central America, amongst other campaigns, with the hope that by affecting the causes of poverty they will be able to make a difference against poverty itself.
