McColl: We were ‘honking’

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers players bowed out of the Scottish Junior Cup with a ‘honking’attitude, according to manager Paul McColl.

The Somervell Park boss was livid with some of the starting XI who fell to a 3-1 defeat to North Superleague side Stonehaven.

The Aberdeenshire outfit had made a 130-mile trip to Cambuslang and found themselves a goal down courtesy of latest Lang signing Graham Ramage.

But a quick turnaround saw the visitors equalise 13 minutes later as the sides went in at the break level and they killed off a depleted Lang in the second half. A gutted McColl said:“I want to say sorry to the fans who came down to see us on Saturday. “That was in no way good enough. “Some of the player’s attitude was honking. And we’ve told them if there is any more of it then they’ll be gone.

“It was a very, very poor performance. It was miles away from what it should have been.

“[Callum] McRobbie was struggling with a throat infection, John Gemmell and Chris Smith were injured and Chris Meikle was suspended. Kris Gebbie was also struggling as well.

“But well done to them [Stonehaven]. They wanted it more than us.”

Things started well enough for the home side and they opened the scoring. A nice turn in the box and then a deft chip over the keeper by Ramage gave the home side an early lead.

Little did they know that was as good as it got.

Five minutes later and a blistering free kick from Jordan Morton rattled off the bar before bouncing behind.

The visitors were level on 19 minutes when they were awarded a very soft penalty, Adam McWilliam converting.

Cambuslang went close again on 35 minutes and Ramage saw his effort come back off the woodwork.

Stonehaven looked the hungrier in the second half and hit Cambuslang on the counter attack to go in front.

On 75 minutes Rob Armstrong blasted the ball into the corner before bagging his second eight minutes later with time and space in the box to beat Ian Stewart.
