A taste of Italy comes to Main Street

-

It is a long way from the north of Italy to Rutherglen Main Street, but that is exactly the route travelled by one woman.

Anueta Laing is the brainchild behind Padano, an Italian restaurant right in the heart of Rutherglen.

Padano opened on Friday, November 3, on the site of the old Bower Bar.

And to mark the occasion, Anueta has teamed up with the Reformer to offer a lucky reader the chance to win a meal for two with a drink.

“A lot of work has gone into this,” Anueta told the Reformer. “From what I have heard, this place used to be a pub and then an Indian restaurant.

“A lot of people know it as the Bower Bar. We wanted to open an Italian here because there’s nothing like this in the area. We have two kids, but there is nowhere around here for a family unless you are going further afield. This will be real, authentic Italian food.”

Anueta comes from a town 40 minutes outside Milan but has lived in the Royal Burgh for the past five years.

Her husband, Paul, grew up in Rutherglen and was a student at Stonelaw High.

Anueta added: “We have both worked in restaurants and travelled a bit in Italy as well as living in Spain and we’ve always been in hospitality

“My husband was operations manager for a restaurant in the city centre but we both just thought it was time to do things for ourselves.”
