Post office closure sparks readers’ fury Our elderly and disabled need these services

- Murray Spooner

Last week the Reformer reported elderly people were going hungry because of the temporary closure of the Rutherglen Post Office.

Community activists said the five-week closure of the Main Street outlet had put undue stress on vulnerable people who they claim have been prevented getting access to their pension.

And with thoughts of the campaigners and residents in mind, we asked our reader’s if post offices offered a vital service in today’s society.

George Cliff from Rutherglen said: “It’s not good that it’s shut. A lot of people depend on it for sending letters, especially the pensioners. “I stay nearer Toryglen so I use the one there. “There’s always been a post office ever since I was a kid and now I’m 48. My mum and dad still

use the post office, it’s a necessity.”

Marrie Coyle, also of Rutherglen agreed. She said: “I have used the post office for many years and there used to be two or three in some areas, now you’re lucky if there is even one. I prefer going to a post office and speaking to people over the counter rather than using the machines.”

Main Street shopper David Butchart said: “It’s sad these places have shut, it’s a vital service.

“Email is the up and coming thing now but a lot of people still send letters.”

Monica Obrien added: “I’m not surprised people are angry. It’s not fair on people having to travel elsewhere especially the elderly or the disabled.”
