Inflated petrol prices disgust local residents
Anger over injustice at the pumps
Ruglonians say they are voting with their feet when it comes to buying petrol after learning of the vast differences in cost at forecourts across the area.
A Reformer investigation revealed last week that motorists in Rutherglen and Cambuslang are paying between 5p and 11p a litre more than their counterparts in wealthy areas.
Even supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda and Morrisons are charging different prices at stores just miles apart.
Alan Gage said: “It’s difficult to see how they can justify doing that. I don’t pay for fuel because I have a company car. I am very, very fortunate but for others that’s quite concerning.”
David Mawbray agreed, adding: “I wasn’t aware of this. I work in town and I spend about £15 to £20 per week. I generally fill up at Tesco in Rutherglen.”
But William Stubbs, of Cambuslang, said he has noticed the price hike. He said: “I know there’s quite a difference between Asda in Blantyre and Toryglen. It’s about four or five pence, and that’s a lot when you’re buying 50 or 60 litres. I don’t fill the car up that much but for families or people travelling to work that would be a lot of money every week.”
Helen Vickers, agreed. “My husband notices the prices,” she said. “He keeps an eye out for that because we use the car a lot. He won’t use Tesco or Asda, he says he prefers different petrol.”
It’s difficult to see how they could justify doing that . . . quite concerning Alan Gage
