45, and Goldie to stay with him because they had been made homeless.

She had left him three months earlier to pursue a relationship with Goldie.

On the night of his murder – two days after the pair moved in – Goldie took Jeremy for a drink to repay his kindness. Instead he murdered him.

He also seriously assaulted Jeremy’s friend Martin McQueenie, causing serious injury.

It was Martin who later managed to alert police and identified Goldie as the culprit.

Officers discovered Jeremy surrounded by items including a yellow Henry Hoover and a broken shoe rack.

Blood on Goldie’s T-shirt, jeans and on the hoover linked him to the scene.

Goldie claimed at the trial he had acted in self defence. But, he was convicted of murder and also of attacking Martin McQueenie.

Lord Arthurson said Goldie already had convictions for violence and that he appeared to have shown “no victim empathy” for what occurred.

Detective chief inspector Allan Burton, officer in charge of the murder inquiry said: “Ralph Goldie carried out a brutal and violent attack on a man who was a neighbour and friend to many where he lived, resulting in his death.

“Jeremy Paradine’s family and friends have been left devastated by the mindless violence that Goldie displayed. My thoughts are today with the family and friends of Jeremy, who have been robbed of the chance to have a future with a man they admired and loved.”

Catherine said: “This first Christmas without him is not going to be good. It’s hard because it’s such a family time of year and obviously with my brother not being here it’s not going to be quite the same.”
