Hundreds flock to fun play sessions in Loop

Stories, arts and crafts

- Douglas Dickie

Over 500 people turned up at surprise pop up and play sessions in Rutherglen’s Cuningar Loop over the autumn period.

Organised by Forestry Commission Scotland and delivered by Operation Outdoor Play, the free sessions aimed to get the whole family outside to play together in a woodland environment and demonstrate the imaginative and creative play that can take place outside.

Residents ignored the cool autumn weather to come out in numbers for three events.

Activities included den building, storytelling and arts and crafts.

Craig Thomson, from Operation Play Outdoors, said: “Pop up and play at Cuningar Loop was designed to encourage the whole family to come and enjoy being outdoors together.

“We’re delighted at the number of people who came down to take part. People really enjoyed themselves and realised just how much fun being outside can be.”

Forestry Commission Scotland hope events such as these will encourage more people to make use of outdoor areas such as Cuningar.

Hugh McNish, social programme manager at Forestry Commission Scotland, said: “As part of our continued commitment to ensuring our greenspaces are accessible and enjoyable for everyone, we regularly come up with new ways to demonstrate the extent of activities that can take place in the woodlands.

“We’ve held days on den building, outdoor cooking, fire building, discovery trails, storytelling, face painting and photography walks.

“Woodlands offer a versatile space to use your imagination and provide additional benefits to health and wellbeing.”
