Main route closes again

Major works in January

- Douglas Dickie

A section of Aikenhead Road is to close for five months from January.

Scottish Water is currently undertaking major work in the area to alleviate flooding and have already closed roads in the area on a number of occasions.

But this will be one of the longest closures yet, with traffic set to be stopped between the junction with Prospecthill Road and Curling Crescent. The closure will start on January 8, 2018. Four properties in this part of Aikenhead Road have experienced internal flooding over a number of years, and there has been flooding to the road and footpaths, due to an issue with the capacity of the local waste water network.

Scottish Water’s contractors Costain Vinci Joint Venture (CVJV) are to install a 55-metre stretch of new waste water pipe or sewer to increase capacity and substantially reduce the risk of flooding to the affected properties and roadway.

The work will involve major excavations and the use of a crane to lift some parts of the new infrastructure into place.

Road traffic management, which has been arranged in liaison with Glasgow City Council’s roads department, will include road diversions which will be signposted.

These will be via Prospecthill Road for southbound vehicles and via King’s Park Avenue for northbound.

Ruaridh MacGregor, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs manager, said: “Our work in the Aikenhead Road area is key investment in the modernisation of the waste water network which will substantially reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

“This work cannot be done without the road closure. We appreciate that the work and road closure will cause some disruption and inconvenience to local residents, businesses and road users but we will do everything possible to minimise this.

“Once complete, this new infrastructure will benefit those directly and indirectly affected by the flooding for many years to come and we are sure the short-term disruption will be far outweighed by the long-term benefits that will be delivered.”

There will be no access from Aikenhead Road to the park and ride car park just to the east of Hampden Park but there will be via Prospecthill Road, Prospecthill Drive and Hangingshaw Place.

Pedestrian access along Aikenhead Road will not be affected, and all local businesses will still be open as usual while works are ongoing.

The Reformer recently reported that road users had been left upset when a closure of Aikenhead Road coincided with major roadworks which were being carried out by Scottish Power on Glasgow Road in Rutherglen. They claimed South Lanarkshire and Glasgow should have collaborated.
