Lang sign ex-Addicks man

-

Cambuslang Rangers have secured the services of ex-Charlton Athletic star Mark Staunton.

The 28-year-old defender has signed a deal at Somervell Park to add to a squad already littered with ex-senior professionals.

After joining Charlton from Celtic for £110,000 in 2006, Staunton left the London club for Falkirk and later had stints at East Fife, Beith, Irvine Meadow and Stirling Albion.

He has already played in two friendly matches for The Lang, a 0-0 draw with East Kilbride Thistle and Saturday’s 4-3 victory over Lowland League side Stirling University.

And his new gaffer Paul McColl is hoping Staunton’s experience will rub off on some of the younger players.

“He’s a good player and he’ll do us a turn,”he said.“He’ll be a sweeper come centre half and he’s a tidy player.

“Staunts has wonderful positional sense and reads the game well too.

“He’ll help out the defence and he brings some more senior experience to the team.”

His arrival could not have been timed better either as Chris Smith and Kris Gebbie returned from injuries to face Stirling University.

John Gemmell, Dale Simeon and Jordan Love had the boys in blue 3-0 ahead at half-time before Jordan Morton put the game to bed in the second half.

With no league fixture for two weeks, McColl hoped the exhibition matches would keep the player’s legs moving before welcoming Largs Thistle to Somervell Park this weekend.

He said:“Stirling Uni were a good wee side, they passed it about well and were a good young team. But to be honest we should have been out of sight after half-time. We just missed a host of chances but it’s good we are creating them rather than not.

“Staunts strolled it again, he’s a real class act. We are nearly back to full strength now with Gebbie and Smith coming back. I don’t know too much about Largs,”he added.

“They are not a bad side if you look at their league position.

“But it’s a flip of a coin to know whether it will be on or not given this weather. ”David Green and Craig Molloy are doubtful for the clash.
