Support for food bank shows Christmas spirit

- Douglas Dickie

As Christmas approaches it is only natural that thoughts will turn to those less fortunate.

Among the celebrations and joy, it is now commonplace to consider others who may be suffering or who cannot enjoy the type of Christmas that most of us recognise.

That is certainly the case in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, and that feeling of helping others is epitomised by residents’ desire to support the Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank. The very fact we require a food bank in our towns shames the nation.

A common mistake is that they have become facilities for those who find themselves out of work, with nowhere else to turn.

But increasingly, people who are working are turning to food banks as a way of feeding themselves and their families.

At this time of year, it is natural to receive stories from schools, organisations and individuals who want to do their bit to help others enjoy a merry Christmas.

And it seems that just about everyone wants to donate to the local food bank.

While it is a disgrace that a charity such as this is required to operate on our very doorstep, it is heartening that so many locals recognise the work the food bank does and want to help.

In this week’s Reformer we have a special report on various activities taking place to support the initiative. You can read more on page four.

On page three, we announce the winners of our Cute Kids competition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered and who voted.

On behalf of the Reformer team, well done to the winners and all the kids who were featured.
