An early present for Elsie

Event raises money

- Douglas Dickie

It will be a happier Christmas for one Cambuslang family after a local business raised money for their daughter.

Three-year-old Elsie How suffers from the rare genetic disorder trichothiodystrophy.

Her family is raising money to help buy specialist equipment to make life easier for the youngster.

When the owners of popular Christmas tree company Elfy Trees heard about her story, they wanted to do their part to help out.

So they organised a special event at their grotto on Johnson Drive which proved a real hit with the community.

Owner Donna Stevenson said: “It was brilliant. We raised over £1,440 on the night but once we have all the money in it will probably be up to £1,700.

“We had the kids writing letters to Santa and ‘elfy selfies’. A friend of mine Jules Spence had her Partylite products there and all her commission went to charity.

“It was a really big success and we’re going to have another fundraiser for her in January when we do a fire walk.”

Elfy Trees has become synonymous with Christmas in the Rutherglen and Cambuslang area.

Their staff dress as elves when delivering trees to add that extra festive sparkle to the occasion.

Residents can still help raise money for Elsie. A ‘guess the elf’s birthday’ competition is ongoing until December 20, while Santa will do a draw live on Facebook that day with the winner picking up a three foot elf doll.

Elfy Trees are also collecting wrapped presents for their Project 31 Christmas party, helping to bring some Christmas cheer to youngsters who might not be expecting much.
