Bean wants repeat of victory at Irvine

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rugby Club captain Alec Bean is aiming to cap 2017 with a victory after recovering from injury.

The skipper spent the first part of the campaign on the sidelines after taking an elbow to the face during a pre-season tournament.

But the 24-year-old is back in the mix and helped his side record a victory in their last match at home to Stewartry.

This weekend The Cambus face Irvine, who sit second from bottom in BT West League Division 1.

Alec’s team ran out 28-24 winners in the second game of the season and the scrum half reckons a similar display is needed this time around.

He said: “Considering the first result, I think we’ll need a repeat performance but we’ve been playing well at the moment so we’re confident we can win this one.

“I’ve played three games so far and we are nearly back to a fullstrength side.

“I got an elbow to the jaw in a preseason tournament, which kept me out for a while, but it’s great to be back.”

The captain wants to get more points on the board come the new year as their league position is behind where they expect to be.

He said: “Am I happy with it? Yes and no. We aimed for mid-table and we are just below that just now.

“But there are a lot of winnable games left to play.”

Saturday’s match at home to Greenock was postponed. This weekend’s clash with Irvine will be the final game of 2017 for Cambuslang.

Head coach Jamie Seery also reckons his side can do the double over Irvine.

He said: “With the result we got last time we are confident we can win.

“We played well but we didn’t have our strongest side out at the time. We had Alec Bean out and a few others but we are pretty much back to full strength now.

“We set out a target to aim for mid-table and we sit in eighth.

“We’d obviously like to be higher but we are closer to the middle than the bottom so we are happy with that.”

Irvine lost their last match 17-14 to Greenock Wanderers while The Cambus triumphed 24-22 against Stewartry. However, only four points separate the two sides ahead of the match at Irvine Community Sports Club, 2pm.
