Glens gaffer says plastic’s fantastic
Harvey not worried by Largs’artificial pitch
Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey reckons his side will not be at a disadvantage when they make the trip to Largs Thistle on Saturday.
The Glens head south-west to the seaside town for a Super First Division clash which is to be played on The Theesel’s plastic pitch.
And the Rutherglen manager is hopeful his team, who train on 4G, can unlock the Ayrshire men’s defence with their slick passing game.
Saturday’s match with Maryhill was called off due to a frozen park but Harvey is confident this weekend’s tie will get the green light: “It is on the artificial surface by the seaside. Unless it snows I don’t see there being a problem with it being on.
“They play on the artificial pitch every week but I don’t think it will be a disadvantage to us because we train on it.
“Ideally we would have liked to have picked up six points in the two games before the winter break.”
Harvey admits they need to keep up the chase with the teams in the top four over the festive period if they are to bag a promotion place come May.
The Glens are currently nine points off their aim but three this Saturday would do their chances no harm as they head into the winter lay-off.
Harvey said: “One week Largs will beat a team comfortably then lose the next. I think it is only Petershill who have been firing on all cylinders so far. They have been at a canter since the start of the season.
“Renfrew have been the surprise package. Cambuslang, Troon and ourselves have been stop-start.
“I would have been happy if we were in the top four at Christmas but we can take consolation with the games in hand we have. Three points would put us six behind Cambuslang if their game is off.
“We have had a poor start by our own standards but we want to be able to hang on to the coattails of the top four over Christmas and New Year.”
Glens are likely to be without Stewart Hall and Jay McKay for the trip to Largs, which is a 1.45pm ko.
