Tots clean up path after pensioner’s fall

Nursery lifts slippery leaves on a neighbour’s path

- Edel Kenealy

Caring toddlers at a Toryglen nursery who learned their elderly neighbour had fallen on wet autumn leaves have cleared the path to her home.

Children from Ardnahoe Nursery went to the aid of Catherine Samuels who suffered a black eye when she slipped on the deluge of leaves falling from trees over her garden fence.

And whilst the 86 year old and her family are seeking to identify who owns the trees, tots from the nursery donned their gloves to clear the path and ramp providing access to her home.

Janet Moffat, head teacher at the nursery, said she learned of Ms Samuel’s plight in the Rutherglen Reformer.

She added: “Our neighbours take good care of our school so we like to take good care of our neighbours.

“We regularly litter pick the streets of Toryglen and around the nursery, so this was an extension of that.

“We regularly go out after lunch but thought that day we would brush the path for our neighbour.

“Ms Samuels was there and said ‘thank you so much’.

“Hopefully it is something we can continue to do.”

Ms Samuels and her family are working to identify who owns the land on which the trees are situated in a bid to find a long-term solution to the problem.

They say the sheer volume of leaves falling means it is difficult to keep the path clear, but they are incredibly grateful for the nursery children’s efforts.

Catherine’s daughter Kathleen Samuels said: “The garden clean-up adds to the environmental work of Ardnahoe Nursery which encourages children to look after the area. They take part in litter picks and have installed their own signs around the community which urge people to ‘bag and bin’ their dog’s dirt and ‘put litter in the bin.’

The work has seen the nursery receive an environmental award from Glasgow City Council and recognition from Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Ms Moffat added: “If we don’t care for our surroundings with our children, aged three and four, they won’t respect the community that they are in and value everything that’s round about us.”
