Charity’s leaping into 2018 with cash boost
Early festive cheers
Christmas has come early for a lifeline charity after it received a cash boost and some festive fun from Santa’s little helpers at Asda Toryglen.
Lightburn Elderly Association Project received a cheque for £8,000 last week when 200 volunteers were also treated to Christmas lunch courtesy of the Asda Foundation.
The money will be used to increase the number of volunteers across the organisation to support isolated older people in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, as well as buy equipment for adult learning classes.
LEAP offers creative and exciting volunteering opportunities by sharing the skills and life experience of older people within the local community whilst bringing back a ‘make do and mend’ culture.
Liz Arbuckle, community champion at Asda Toryglen, said she was delighted to hand over the hefty cheque in the same year LEAP celebrated its 25th anniversary.
“The volunteers at LEAP are brilliant and, without a doubt, the real hidden heroes of our community,” Liz said.
“It is a privilege to be able to help the group in this way and continue to support the community in any way we can.”
Gilbert Feron, chairman of LEAP, added: “We had a great time with Asda today, and Liz provided some welcome Christmas cheer for our members.
“This donation and the continued support of Asda is extremely useful in helping us continue our work, and we can’t thank the team at Asda Toryglen enough for all their support.”
