Brilliant and brutal

-

Brawl in Cell Block 99 (18)

Writer-director S. Craig Zahler proves ace debut Bone Tomahawk was no fluke as he delivers a scorching sophomore outing.

A serious Vince Vaughn is a revelation in this brutal, gripping drama.

Bones and lives are shattered in a gloriously over-the-top journey to hell and back.

Rough Night (18)

A strong cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Jillian Bell and Zoë Kravitz, can’t save this risible ‘comedy’.

Far from forming realistic, Bridesmaids-style, bonds, this ensemble feel thrown together and share little chemistry. Most of the jokes are crude and reliant on jokes done much better in similar genre fare.

Logan Lucky (12)

Just four years on from his supposed retirement from directing, Steven Soderbergh is back behind the camera.

Channing Tatum and Adam Driver star as brothers who carry out a daring raid during a NASCAR race.

Tatum is perfect as the put-upon charming rogue and Driver hones his impressive comedic chops.

But it’s a barely recognisable Daniel Craig who swipes the movie from everyone else as he hams it up as safecracker Joe Bang.

The heist itself is a blast and the script is full of zingers, mad-cap scenarios and quirky characters.

Logan Lucky is Soderbergh’s most crowd-pleasing film since the first Ocean’s hit 16 years ago.
