Loses luscious locks in charity chop

- Edel Kenealy

Burnside shoppers may have mistook the Tesco store for the hairdressers when a sales assistant underwent the chop for charity.

Amelia Dzierozynski had her head shaved in the Stonelaw Road store in a bid to raise cash for Maggie’s Centres.

Amelia agreed to lose her luscious locks to thank the charity for its support of her mother, Susan George, in her battle with kidney cancer.

The 42 year old said she turned her efforts to fundraising for Maggie’s Centres when her mum was 10 months clear of the disease.

“I thought a head shave is something that is drastic and I wanted to raise as much money as possible,” Amelia said.

“For some women their hair is their identity and it was a big thing for me to do. My hair is so long that I thought this is the one thing that would raise a substantial amount of money.”

Amelia’s thoughts were correct and she surpassed her £1,000 target by £27.

She received sponsorship for her head shave, but also raised cash with a raffle and tombola in Tesco Burnside.

The business was incredibly supportive of her efforts, donating a hoover and TV to the raffle and allowing Amelia to raise awareness of Maggie’s Centres in store.

She said: “I’m over the moon with the money raised and can’t thank people enough, especially Tesco Burnside for all their help and support and the customers. It was a fantastic day and a fantastic result for Maggie’s.”

The charity provides a network of drop-in centres across the UK, which aim to help anyone who has been affected by cancer.

Amelia’s mum, 66-yearold Susan, attended the centre at Monklands Hospital, which like the others, is a one-stop shop for information and support services for people with cancer.

“They make you feel so welcome, it’s a home from home,” Amelia added.
