‘Nightmare’ journeys as road section shuts

Major impact on commuters by adding on almost an hour

- Douglas Dickie

Drivers faced a nightmare commute on Monday morning - as a section of Aikenhead Road shut for five months.

Scottish Water is carrying out extensive work in the area, with the road shut between Prospecthill Road and Curling Crescent.

It is hoped the work will alleviate flooding to properties in the area.

But some motorists were unhappy at the lack of information and planning surrounding the closure.

Some took to social media to voice their frustration, with one describing a 45-minute journey from Croftfoot to Mount Florida.

One driver told the Reformer the closure added an hour on to his commute.

He said: “I know there have been signs up about the closure for the last few weeks but you are never quite sure about the effect until it actually happens.

“Aikenhead Road and roads off it have been plagued by works in recent months, which has been pretty annoying, but this closure caps it all.

“The diversion added nearly an hour onto my journey this morning as it took us onto Prospecthill Road and Cathcart Road.

“For long periods we were simply at a standstill - it was just chock-a-block.

“I’m lucky I have an understanding boss and it was a bit of a comfort that he was also late for work on Monday morning something that must have been repeated at workplaces all over the area.”

The motorists said he expected the closure to have a knock-on effect on routes through Rutherglen as drivers look for alternatives.

Laura Boyce, corporate affairs officer at Scottish Water, said: “In recent years, a total of four properties in this part of Aikenhead Road have experienced internal flooding.

“And there has also been flooding on the road and footpaths due to an issue with the capacity of the local waste water network in the Toryglen area.

“The work forms part of Scottish Water’s £250m investment in the upgrade of parts of the waste water network across the Greater Glasgow area to help tackle flooding and improve river water quality in the River Clyde and its tributaries.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause and would like to thank customers, road users and businesses in advance for their patience and co-operation.”
