MP wants bank views

Closure impact assessed

- Jonathan Geddes

Rutherglen MP Ged Killen is looking to hear from people who have been affected by the Royal Bank of Scotland closing branches in their area.

He has opened a consultation on his website asking constituents how they think closures will impact them, or how existing closures have caused them problems.

The Rutherglen and Cambuslang area has seen a number of closures in the past few years.

Ged Killen MP said: “The responses I have had in illustrates everyday consequences of these closures for local people.

“These closures are yet another blow to our high streets and our local communities. The closures are unacceptable and fail to take into account the needs of the most the vulnerable people in our communities.

“I will be bringing them up when the Scottish Affairs Committee meets in January, but the more constituents get in touch, the more evidence I will be able to present.”

One respondent to the survey explained the difficulties they have had recently, particularly to the self-employed.

She said: “My husband is a self-employed private hire driver. As such we have a lot of coin to bank - this cannot be done online!

“We now have to travel from Cambuslang to Rutherglen and, although branches in Cambuslang and Burnside are now closed, there never seems to be more than two tellers on the counter at any one time.

“You can wait for over 30 minutes before being seen. This eats into time that could be spent earning.”
